Your Terminal output shows the following issues:

 Hard blocked: yes
1: sony-bluetooth: Bluetooth

2: sony-wwan: Wireless WAN

3: phy0: Wireless LAN

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
#auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid roadrunner.sux
wireless-key 20102010201020102010201020
wireless-channel 11
wireless-mode managed

First issue: Contents of your /etc/network/interfaces file are wrong.

Use the following command to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file:

 gksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

Edit the file so that it ONLY contains the following TWO lines:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Then SAVE the changes to the /etc/network/interfaces file.

Second issue: Hard blocked: yes -> So your wireless card is disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a combination of these factors...

There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"

Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....

Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset after rebooting:

rfkill unblock all

sudo rfkill unblock all

Then retest wireless using Network Manager.

If these previous changes are not enough to get the wireless connection working again, you will probably need to install wicd to replace Network Manager.

You can install wicd with this command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wicd

After installing wicd, you will need to reboot.

I have no further suggestions to make....

Thanks Mark! I switched to Natty and my wifi problems are solved. At one point I did accidentally turn off the hardware wifi switch in the front of the machine, causing much headache, so if anyone else reads this... double check that :P
