problem with upgrading 10.04 to 10.10

Asked by Liam Hyland

I have a samsung netbook with windows 7 and I put on it ubuntu 10.04. Today I decided to upgrade to 10.10 and it downloaded then started installing. After a long time I hit a key to show the progress and it was hung up. I then (unwisely?) turned it off and when I turned it on I got a grub message with a bash- something and gust the grub> and it has stuck there. I am not too interested in saving the programme I am worried about some pictures and documents I want off it.
I have gone to sourceforge and downloaded the boot info script ( long list of information... How can I get my computer back in action either with 10.04 or 10.10.
Thank you and with gratitude. Liam

If you're only interested in keeping your pictures and documents I would just boot from a live cd, copy these documents to an external hard disk and reinstall 10.10 from scratch. This should be easier than restoring the old system.

When you reinstall the system, consider keeping you're home directory on a separate partition. Like this, you can keep you're files when something similar should ever happen again.
