Are there any plans about syncing Ubuntu to Debian Multimedia?

Asked by Pizuz

Since Ubuntu seems more average/multimedia/exWindows user oriented than Debian is, wouldn't it be better to also include Debian Multimedia packages for even more format support than already possible?

Especially in the field of AAC audio Ubuntu seems a bit lacking and the base libraries are insufficient for some extended features in several programs, e.g. EasyTag (which has M4A/AAC tagging support disabled in its Ubuntu package).

I have already made very good experience with packages found on Debian Multimedia: Installing a few libraries from there immediately solved all my problems in the M4A/AAC case, although this only works in the beginning of an Ubuntu release's life cycle.

So, wouldn't it be better if Ubuntu synced with Debian Multimedia, too?

You should checkout https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu .

But why install stuff from an entirely separate repository, if Ubuntu could be able to deliver it natively? And libmpeg4ip is not in Medibuntu, by the way.

Its for legal reasons, see the first line on the medibuntu wiki page,
[WWW] Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu) is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons (copyright, license, patent, etc).
This is most likely the reason for the lack of libmpeg4ip as well.
Thanks,
