why does ubuntu 7.10 go to a konsole like screen after re-booting after running it a while

why did my 7.10 screen go to a konsole like login after i rebooted it after it was running for a while...?

i did see the desktop and no it's not a screen saver and no i'm not new i started with 7.04 and it's only after a while of running gusty with everything functioning that i re-boot and it decides to not boot to the graphic login screen

There are no errors printed? Try starting x using "startx".

You can scroll up using shift+pageup. What about starting x, can you at all log in?

I mean log in in text mode, using this konsole like thing? Can you describe in some more details what do you see (last lines of text for example)?
