If you're going to insist on using Windows software, then you should stick with Windows. It is possible to run alot of Windows programs in Ubuntu if you install wine, but you should remember that Linux isn't compatible with Windows and most likely never will be. There are many open source software packages, though, that can compete with closed source equivalents in Windows. Many of thiese will be available for both Ubuntu and Windows. Ubuntu comes with Pidgin pre-installed. This is an IM application that handles most IM- and chat protocols. There are numerous desktop publishing tools available in Ubuntu. The Gimp comes with Ubuntu, and is about as powerful as Photoshop, but uses a very different graphical interface.

It's difficult to say if Ubuntu will be a good choice for you, since it mostly depends on your preferences. On the upside, you don't actually have to install it in order to try it out. You can download the Desktop CD, burn it, reboot your machine, and run Ubuntu directly from it. Nothing is written to your harddisk, unless you install it, and it's a bit slow, but other than that, it's a normal system. My advise is that you do that and experiment with it, and have fun. Remember, though, that there is a new version of Ubuntu around the corner. I would probably wait for it. It is scheduled for release on October 18th.
