DVD Playback

Asked by wjr74

have used 6.06, 7.04, and now the 7.10 beta. All 3 have the same problem: I install the OS from a CD and the installation is flawless. I install support for DVD playback, and it works flawlessly for a few days, then it stops working for a few days, then it resumes for a few days, then stops working again. My CD-RW / DVD-RAM drive has been like this since 6.06. Any answers?

CDs work fine 100% of the time, but the dvd condition affects both commercial dvds and backups. Reboots don't do the trick.

I have a Compaq 5015 laptop

Is it possible your DVDROM is just flaky? Do you have another one you can try? Do you see anything in 'dmesg' (issued from a terminal) when your trying to use it and it fails?
Thanks,
David P.
