You need the driver to be as close to the name of the printer as passable. so you should probably get the drivers for a F4000 or F3500 or F5000.

does Your printing work?

if so the F300 probably didn't have a scanner.

Tell me if I misunderstood you and you had a F300 before and you upgraded to a F4100.

Thank you for help
This is all my printer story. My computer is a INSPIRON 8200 DELL laptop. First when I was with Microsoft I had a Lexmark X74 All in One with scanner that was perfectly working on Windows, but sibnce I have changed for Ubuntu-Linux, my poor Lexmark printer was not working at all : we could not find the driver. So, I bought an HP DeskJet F4180 All in One, because my Ubuntu friend said it was the right thing to do.
Once again the driver was not found in the printer installation system, so finally we did as you are saying, going to the nearest driver which was HP DeskJet F300, the printing was working but the scanner was out, total inactive. So since two weeks I am trying to solve this problem and I am turning mad.
This is because, in addition,I have a problem with my WIFI Card, Linksys Wireless Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g, Cisco Systems.
UBUNTU is fantastic but drives one mad.
Best regards krsbuilt

For printing support for a printer, you can check the Printer Database from the OpenPrinting project (Linux Foundation),
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

From there you can find about your specific MFP the page
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_4100

On that page it says that scanning and other advanced functions work, using something called HPLIP.
If you follow the link on hplip, you get the device support page,
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/mono_laser_mfp.html
which lists your printer.

So what we have established here is that scanning should technically work as well.
This is important for future searching. The new Ubuntu 7.10 (coming out in a week) is supposed to have even better printer support, so you may be able to get it up and running without much fuss.

Regarding the wireless card, you need to find the model number. With this, it is possible to see how to get it supported.

I have installed Ubuntu recently and am unable to install my hp 2400 series scanne jet. The driver of hp scanjet is not recognised by Ubuntu. It says " scanner device is not attached"

Please advise me how to install the scanner.

I have intel P4 version server.
