netmanager panel icon

Asked by Chuck

I humbly ask your help. I want to restore the original "stair step" icon in the upper panel for networkmanager 0.6.4. Somehow the icon was changed to a bent green arrow. I am connected on a wireless card in my laptop. Wireless still works but I like the original icon better.

I have fumbled around searching for an answer without any luck. Can you give me a quick reference so that I can restore the stair step icon as well as learn something else about Ubuntu. Thank you in advance.

Could you please provide a screenshot that shows the "bent green arrow"? I am not sure I have seen this before.
You can get a screenshot of your screen by pressing PrtSrc. You can upload the image to any image sharing website.

I emailed a screen pic of the green arrow. Specifically, tell me how to change the preferences for the display of the netmanager. Also, to whom do I email the prtscrn pic?

There are no options to change the display of NetworkManager. It will display the standard small icon that depends on the type of network you have (wireless: staircase, wired: two monitors, something else?).

You can upload the screenshot to a service such as
http://imageshack.us/
Once you upload the image, you will be presented with a URL that you can post here so that we can use to see the image.

If the above works for you, you will see a green down-facing arrow bent 90 degrees to the left in the top panle on the right. If the above doesn't work, imagine a green down-facing arrow bent 90 degrees to the left in the upper panel on the right.

I no longer have that icon. It was replaced with this icon. This pic shows 2 screen panels. One is in the middle. I added it yesterday. The one on the right is what took the place of the green arrow. I don't have a clue, but that is the pic.

The original icon, a step ladder (or progressively taller bar graph-like icon) somehow was removed and replace originally with the green, bent arrow and not the 2 screen icon.

Any clues as to what I've done? I remain on wireless using a laptop

I think you send the thumbnails of the screenshots. They look quite small to me.
I can see the green arrow. It is something I never saw before. Since it is not there anymore, then it is good.

In the next screenshot I can see two network icons. Can you right-click on them and then click About?
You can see whether these icons are for NetworkManager or something else.
Normally, you need only one such icon.

You can check the bug reports at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager
to see if this issue has been reported before.
If not, you can report there.

A quick glance on the bug list shows a bug when you use Kubuntu and you setup a manual connection; in this case, the icon for wireless is a standard wired icon. However, you do not mention Kubuntu in your question.
