installing ubuntu

Asked by ab1234

a few months ago windows got deleted off of my laptop somehow. Im now trying to install ubuntu onto it instead of reinstalling windows. When i put the cd in i get to the menu and press run/install and i get a white screen but it then freezes. Can anyone tell me what i need to do to get this to install?

Hi ab1234,
I'd like to help you with this but require further info:

1. where did you get the CD from, did you download and burn it yourself?
2. have you used the CD to install Ubuntu on another system?
3. What are your laptop specs?

ab1234, have you tried to "Start ubuntu in safe graphics mode" by selecting it from Ubuntu boot menu ?

ab1234, Please, from Ubuntu cd menu:
1) - check your media for defect
2) - do a memory test

Okay good. The Live CD can be quite slow so you'll need to be patient.

I've had a laptop of similar spec to yours and the LiveCD version of Ubuntu wouldn't install. In the end I opted for the alternative install version. The alternative version will install Ubuntu in text mode without loading a window manager. You can get a copy from the Ubuntu website.
