printer sharing overly complicated

Asked by JohnG

Feisty printer sharing was a model of simplicity - "Detect LAN Printers" and "Share Printers". Gutsy printer sharing should be as simple. I have not yet figured out how to share printers on a LAN using gutsy.

Hi!

In Gutsy, you should go to System->Administration->Printing, then select "Server options" from the listbox to the left.

Then you can check the corresponding checkboxes, like "Share published printers", but you need to make sure that a printer you want to share is "Shared" (see Policies tab after selecting the printer from the listbox to the left)

This seems to have solved the problem. However, the fist two times that I tried to print on the Gustsy system from the Feisty system, I got the following message:

Error Printing
Too many failed attempts

Thanks for the help

Hi,

I have installed Gutsy on all my local LAN PCs. I configured the PC with the printer attached to share the printer in the Policies section, as described above; on the clients I configured to listen for shared printers.

I had no luck at all!

Remembering that I had to change the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file manually in the past, I decided to take a look here,

Here is the section concerned,

<Location />
  # Allow shared printing...
  Order allow,deny
  Allow 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
  # Allow @LOCAL

I added the line "allow 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0"
and disabled "Allow @LOCAL"

This is how it was set up in Fiesty.

I restarted cups with

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

went to the client machines Administration -> Printing

and Hey Presto the remote printer is now displayed.

Just to be sure it works I printed a document from OpenOffice. Worked great!

I hope this little tip helps.

My fix finally, hope this help someone .
I uncommented "Allow shared printing"
and commented "Allow@local"
I then restart cups using hilary instruction
Enter 'http://localhost:631/admin,check share published printer, click on change setting.

The remote printers now show up
