Kernal Panic..

Asked by Aathma

I installed Ubuntu via Wubi as dual boot with Win XP. Yesterday I updated my ubuntu and ended it abruptly after downloading the updates. Today, I encounter a problem while booting "kernel panic- not sync". I have 256 RAM and partitioned 37.5 GB disk space for Ubuntu. Please help me out in this situation...

Hi Aathma!

This sounds pretty serious. I suspect, that the update was not finished and thereof the filesystem got damaged. You could boot with a linux live cd and try to repair the filesystem, if you have important data on the linux partition. Or you could at least get your files into a backup.

When there are no important files in it, you could simply install feisty or gutsy on the linux partition. It should detect your windows and integrate it in the boot menu. Your Windows CD won't be able to repair this, so please don't try.

Hi VonHalenbach

Thanks for your kind suggestion. Just now, I reinstalled the Ubuntu and now it boots well. I suspect the problem is with the updates. Now, I got 121 updates ready for me and I am hesistant to update all because it might again cause the same problem. My RAM is 256 and I find Ubuntu is terribly slow in my system. While I am typing this, I am installing Xubuntu desktop on top of Ubuntu because of my system resource contraint. Please suggest me is this wise to have Xubuntu as desktop.

*chuckles* I am currently on xubuntu gutsy gibbon, because i have only 313 MB ram in my old computer. Before i used Kubuntu Feisty Fawn. Welcome to the light world of Xfce4 window manager! In Xubuntu you can use all programs you could have used before, but with much lesser memory just for the graphical user interface. In my opinion Xubuntu is a good choice.

cheers

Stefan

By the way, you don't need to have every update. When your system works properly, it is most of the time better to let it be as it is. You should only look for security warnings in the news on the internet, if some software has a security bug and needs a quick update, to not let bad guys take over your computer.

Hi Stefan

I have successfully installed Xubuntu. It logs into Xubuntu and again it comes to the Ubuntu desktop. How to change this? Also, it takes much time to open any application in Ubuntu and is there any way to enhance the speed?

With best regards

Is it best to uninstall Ubuntu and install Xubuntu alone? Keep in my mind I possess a memory impoverished system..

Aathma, i have the same issue like you. I have Kubuntu as my old system and then added the xfce desktop, to try it out. Now i have two different window managers fighting against each other for my attention. :)

The best way for you might be to install a fresh xubuntu over your current linux installation. Do you want to keep the windows or did you have deleted it already?

You can see your partitions with

sudo fdisk -l
