Will boot up, but will not show splash, or no GUI

Asked by tangentabacus

I have an older gateway laptop, and I have been using Linux on it since day one... Although for some reason, I am completely able to boot, but It will not show the login screen, although I can still login... like loggin in with your eyes closed, except it just isnt there. I have the most recent dev release of Ubuntu Gutsy, and I just updated my system the day before. I was doing work on it late last night and fell asleep, and the battery died, but when I tried to restart it... these symptoms started. I really do not have much information to give than this. I tried looking around but could not find any alternative help.

Sorry, forgot to give info on my system. It's a custom box with the Intel D845GLVA motherboard and an Intel Celeron 2.20 GHz chip. The Nvidia board is a GeForce2 MX200.
