Desktop freeze

when trying to chance my dsktop resolution (?) from 1600 x 1200 to 1024 x 768 or anything else the OS freezes. Not reacting on anything only to the powerbutton :(
I have XP1800+, Asus A7V266-E and ATI AIW 8500.
Ubuntu as the only OS on the hd, no other hd in my pc.

Check wheter your display card supports the resolution that you are trying to configure.
Your system may only be able to use the resolution it supports
for more info please search google.com/linux specifying your display adapters make and gather more info about the card
You may also try installing official ATI drivers from the ATI web-site

Yes, it does support it, I am trying to chance the resolution to 1024 x 768.

First I had 5.04 OS and there I could chance the resolution but not in 5.10.
ATI's site says I already have the latest drivers.

Is there something in you /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

If you have SSH running cann you SSH in from another computer? I would recommend looking at the Xorg.0.log files as well.
