pptpconfig broke between 6.06 and 7.04 via 6.10

Asked by cmnorton

I am currently running 7.04, after successfully upgrading from 6.06 via 6.10. I have network-manager, network-manager-gnome, and network-manager-pptp installed. From pptpconfig, I am getting this error, but in 6.06, I could create a vpn connection: Using interface ppp0pptpconfig: monitoring interface ppp0

Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
CHAP authentication succeeded
MPPE 128-bit stateless compression enabled
--->>> Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP <<<---

What steps can I take to fix this? I have been looking at vpn-connection in edgy, referenced from the Ubuntu forums, but my network manager does not look like what is in the examples.

Any suggestions for fixing this would be appreciated.

By putting my wireless card into roaming mode -- which prevented me from connecting to the internet -- the VPN connections came up on the network-manager menu. Even after I got the wireless connection's roaming turned off, vpn connections stayed on the menu, as long as my built-in wired connection was enabled. (I only have wireless at home.)

I set the VPN connection up, and tried to connect, and nothing comes up to tell me the progress of the connection. pptpconfig still fails with the same error.

I checked /var/log/syslog and got this error:

no currently active network device, won't activate VPN

as the last line.

Is this related to resolv.conf, and is there a workaround?

The Ubuntu forums are recommending re-installing Feisty, but that is not an easy option for me. I am hoping there is a workaround.

Would you recommend some kind of partial un-install/install to get this problem solved?

One of the suggestions from James Cameron was to use an earlier ppp module. As I was setting all that up, I noticed that paths in the modules.dep of the current kernel pointed to prior kernels. Is that normal?

This is not solved, but I've put more details into bug 149928
