k_chupe Avant Window Navigator requires that you are running a composite manager. Try using the built in 'Desktop Effects' (compiz) in 'System>Preferences>Desktop Effects' Providing you have proper hardware acceleration working (depending on your GFX-Card) also consider using beryl... much nicer than compiz.

'sudo apt-get install beryl emerald'

Also direct any questions regarding composite managers to irc.freenode.net #ubuntu-effects

do i start beryl before i start awn or after? i'm almost willing to just settle with slimdock.

A composite manager (beryl/compiz) must be running, as I have said... If you are using beryl then launch 'beryl-manager' then choose beryl as your window manager by right clicking the little Jewel icon in your notification area.
