.gz stands for GNU Zip ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzip ) and should be readable by any packer... which version of ubuntu are you running? right clicking should give you the option to extract it....

Some propositions (install through adept package manager):

- file-roller (gnome's default archive manage),
- p7zip-full (7-zip, in universe repository),
- xarchiver (independent of gtk+; again in universe).

You can extract from command line too.
