ok so it is possible to have a file sharing across computers? you know like windows has \\nameofcomputer and you can see the files that they are sharing.
if so then how and what do i use to do it.

also i was wondering about ftp. can i use smart ftp on a ubuntu os. what i am really looking for is a free os that is as close to windows as possible. installing exe and all the good stuff that i do on it.

File sharing across computers is of course possible, though I can't help you as to how set it up - I never used it.

As for an ftp client - depending on your desktop environment, whether it is KDE or GNOME - you have multiple choices. I use GNOME, which is the default in Ubuntu, and use gFTP as an FTP client. You can install it by typing "sudo apt-get install gftp" in your command line (terminal) and entering _your user_ password when it prompts for one. I never used SmartFTP, but I can say that gFTP more than satisfies my needs.

If you want to access to a window shared network resource you can do it by browsing your network using the menu
Resource->Network

If you want make a persistent local link to a remote share you can do it using the Resource-> Connect to server menu item

You must install, setup and use Samba to share files from Ubuntu.
Here a video for Ubuntu 6.10 but it is almost the same for Ubuntu 7.04 and for 7.10 that show you how to Sharing files with Samba

Something more like Windows...? I think you look for Reactos take a look at http://www.reactos.org/en/about_userfaq.html, if you want try it you can download the live image Reactos now is in alpha stage it will be in beta at the end of this year.
