No Sound

Asked by Andrew Marshall

After installing Feisty Fawn over XP I find that I can't seem to get any sound. To be honest it hasn't bothered me that much whilst looking at clips on firefox but I've installed Skype 1.4 beta for linux and can't get sound. I have very average computer knowledge and so am thinking that I need to do something in general about sound settings but shouldn't they be adjusted when I installed ubuntu' Not a criticism, more a case that it's something most people need. Is there any chance someone could let me know what is missing and what to do? Many thanks

Hi:

you need to give more info about your system, type on a terminal:
lspci
and copy the result.
have you tried opening a wav file, or a ogg file,or a mucis CD, are you able to listen to those? or the sound when you log into gnome?

Go into synaptic and install the alsa package-if your not familiar then search for alsa and then check the ones you want to install, then click apply.

I left something out, make sure you only install alsa-tools-gui, alsa-tools, +gstreamer0.10-alsa.

You can also try going into add/remove and installing totem-xine, plus install all of the gstreamer plugins THAT ARE IN ADD/REMOVE ONLY. If you install all versions of gstreamer in synaptic you may have conflicts.

There may be some problems with your sound card, what Rodrigo suggests would let us know the precise model of it and check for you if this is the case.

To access terminal go to: applications-->accessories-->terminal.

To rodrigo,

Sorry for late reply, but I got an email with your kind response, but part was missing. I thought something went wrong until I went in to access the question properly. I have done as you asked, with the following result:

Just to be sure, do i understand you properly that you get no sound at all and it's not only a problem with skype?

There are known problems with intel hda sound cards, and often configuring them requires some work. Gutsy will have newer sound subsystem (alsa 1.0.14), which gives a much better chance that all will just work, so i would wait until 18th and try with Gutsy Gibbon.

If you want to resolve it now, here is a guide that often works:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
If you need more help with following it let us know.

Many thanks.

I've tried playing a CD and DVD and get nothing.

I had a quick look at the link to try and fix now but it looked too
complicated. I don't know what Gutsy Gibbon will do but I will wait
and download.

Thanks again

I have just upgrade to Gutsy Gibbon and found that the sound still
isn't working. I've tried a music CD, Skype and a news clip and still
nothing. I would be extremely grateful if I could get some more help
on this.

I saw another question posed for someone who seems to be having the same problem. The advice given was to double click on the speaker icon at the top right of the desktop.

This is what I did:

I went in and played around with the different options on the volume control. On the 'Playback' tab it had the following three available:

Headphone
PCM
Speaker

Not that I knew what I was doing but just went into 'Edit - Preferences' and added all the other options. Not sure what they all do, or if I even need them but the sound and microphone seem to work fine.

I'm having the same problem, Toshiba Satellite Pro A120.

Gutsy 2.6.22-14-generic
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

I've trawled the internet for numerous advice everything from downloading realtek drivers and trying to compile them (which always failed).
Different alsa drivers and many many complete re-installs.
Nothing works.

RE: you can't get audio to work. Here was my problem, it was too easy.

I have an Audigy
I did an lspci command in a terminal and got the following for my audio card.
02:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)

It seems in my installation, Gutsy, the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack is enabled in the gnome volume control. I disabled this and the audio magically worked. No compiling, etc.

1) In the upper right hand corner is the Master Audio volume control.
2) Left mouse double click the icon. You will see 3 tabs. Different playing and recording options are available, click what you need.
3) Select the SWITCHES tab and disable the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack.

Voila! It works.

Good Luck
Gutsy works great, pretty much right out of the box, but it needs to be more usable for the average person.

My God. Impossible. This is the reason why I'm not using Ubuntu. Nice view, but I can't make my audio work. Impossible. I try to find the directions, but seems to be a NASA engineer training to use it.
I have the HDA-Intel IDT 92HD71B7X, and I have microphone capture, but no AUDIO.

Yes, Linuxes can be hard to get working with some hardware. However there seems to be a rather simple solution for the card you mention, here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/71735, marked with a grey background; you've tried it already? Opening a file and adding a few lines hopefully doesn't really require a NASA engineer ;-)

From another thread it also seems there should be some special quirks patch for that card in some future ALSA update (probably not that soon, considering all it requires to for it make to repositories).

I tried many of the terminal lines, and a lot of things showed up, but at the end I got lost in the middle of different stuff, and the audio is still zero !!
The point is. I don't have the ALSA option that they say to change in my sound preferences.
Honestly I'm not a hacker, but I'm not the worst dummy with computer stuff.
This issue is the main reason that holds me using Windows.
Unfortunately it still seems to be a NASA engineer training !!!
Txs anyway for helping. I will keep trying. In case you or someone else can give me any other tip I will be very happy.

Ah, yes, seems the panel has changed in 9.10. Maybe you could install PulseAudio Manager/Device Chooser (through Add/Remove) and find there the settings I'm thinking about (devices/sinks particularly). Nonetheless, it would be best to make a new question (including card name and system version) -- would be visible for many more potential helpers, someone may have an answer ready while I'm still using 9.04, so can't even check properly what I'm suggesting.

Txs. I will do this. I ran a test using the new PulseAudio, and what seemed interesting was the fact that everything was " ready", but the Meters for each individual thing showed me that the PulseAudio Volume Meter does not show any content, but the input (playback), but the Recording is bumping up to the top of the meter. The microphone works, because I can see the meter working when I speak.
I will do a new topic with the whole info I collected up to now.
Thank you so much for your whole help.

Dear friendly helper
After your suggestion in creating a new question, I did it, but still trying to get it done by my own, and now it is working. Txs again, and only for the records the link below is my comments on my question that in fact worked.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/91486
Now I have the happiness in using Linux !!!
For the beginners like me, please do not give up, it is a nice challenge.
Cheers
