Ubuntu Problems, need help

Asked by Hal

Installed ubuntu 10.04, it seems like the early days of windows like behavior, here are some problems:
( and who came up with the this PINK theme for the leading linux operating system, wtf were they thinking,
could have picked some nice light or dark theme with cool colors... and what about the previous brown doodoo theme ???
ubuntu designers really need a refresher course )

1. i turned off splash screen, now i get some blue circle sign with some large gabled off screen text, wtf ?
how to get rid of ANY text during linux booting ( except grub )?

2. when going into hibernate i get some text on the screen with message i have no clue about,
how to get rid of any text messaged when going into hibernate mode ?

3. when turning off the machine ( or restart ) at the very end the speakers ( hp pavilion 64bit laptop quad core )
get some garbled horrible noise... i got pulse audio, is there a fix ?

4. google earth - no photo layer is working ... i click on any pictures - gray box

5. skype - webcam is not working while it works in Cheese... ( the fix is supposedly to disable cairo dock open gl,
what is the connection ??? )

6. installed Plymouth theme controller - no gui, where the heck is the gui for this theme changer ?

7. every time i upgrade ubuntu another entry pops up in grub... ? why and hot get rid of those entries...?

cosmetically Ubuntu is just horrible looking THING
it boots dirty ( text and sounds and quirks ) , pink theme is horrible the worst you can possibly come up with ...
and basic programs are not working, seems like every new program you install - lookout for some feature that's
not supported in linux

i'm preparing to dictch ubuntu in favor of either a cleaner distro or win7 ( works cleanly on same machine )

any help appreciated...
thanks!

The rule here (to get best help) is to post single question so please do it... please don't group questions...

Here we can help you to solve your Ubuntu issue...

So if you think Ubuntu is not for you please simply install the operative system you like...

If you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; echo; dpkg -l | grep linux-image-2

I can advise how to reduce the installed kernels.

The theme can easily be changed. I personally use a sunrise theme which isn't too bad. When you hibernate you will get text, why is it so offensive?

Here is the sunrise theme:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu+sunrise+plymouth?content=129696

to remove the sounds you are hearing you can run;

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

And see if there is a line with:

power_saver =

If not then change it to (or if it is missing add it):

power_saver = 0

This should reduce issues there

Thanks

BTW, idle threats of changing distro or using Windows doesn't make anyone want to help you any less or more and adds no value to the question, so don't bother next time

Thanks

another problem i forgot to mention:
i turn off my touchpad on this laptop ( 1 year old 64 bit hp ) and ubuntu just dies...
mouse clicks don't work, menus don't work, AND there is no way out of this except
press and hold power button
bottom line - i turn touchpad off - i lose the OS ( ubuntu ), PERIOD !

SO MUCH FOR legendary linux reliability ... TOTAL BS ...

*******************
1st impression is what matters...
it should either be
A. military type rough but solid
B. eye candy like windows

ubuntu is a neither and it's pink !
everyday seems like a new problem, already about 10 of them...
so now i have to enter separate questions for each of these annoying things...

regards.

Have you done this? or used the LD_PRELOAD command from the skype FAQ?

ie, launch skype with: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

>every time i upgrade ubuntu another entry pops up in grub... ? why and hot get rid of those entries...?
Remove old kernels, or modify your grub configuration

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 (search for "old kernel")

Pretty appauling attitude throughout if you ask me...

yeah, it's the attitude...

the problem is that since i installed ubuntu, it's constant non-stop tweaking to get "the next" problem solved...
trying to get the stability and peace of mind - not happening

now, i'm thinking what's gonna happen if i upgrade the OS ??? and what if it breaks altogether?
the fear of losing the OS and rebuilding the machine from scratch - that's not acceptable

overall feeling feedback i get from ubuntu is = not solid, problems that pile up and need research and time to solve
- about it's about time to ditch it, although i definately like linux compared to windows eye candy, it's just it looks like
ubuntu still needs work to get solid... maybe a couple more builds

and that pink theme - just burns my retina :-)

*************
in any case, thanks for helping out with the answers... this relieves the frustrations...
thanks!

The theme is easily changed with very little effort. So the pink theme will go away if you change it, just like the default hills + blue window decorator is changed by many users to something more appealing

1. how to change your logon and boot screens, etc is here

http://maketecheasier.com/change-login-and-boot-screen-in-ubuntu-lucid/2010/05/13

2. no photo layers in google earth anymore because they violated privacy laws. it doesn't show on any google earth installations, not just with ubuntu.

3. sounds like you sthould stick with windoze. ubuntu and other linux system are different from windoze and is not for everyone.

Can you help with this problem?
