How to install Firefox 1.5?

Asked by Mikhail

How to install Firefox 1.5 in parallel to Firefox 2.0? I am running Ubuntu Gutsy on i686 machine.

I am writing a web site and need it to test page layout. There seems to be no package in Ubuntu repositories, and no packages on official FF website. The only place tar.gz could be found is an FTP archive. However, after unpacking it doesn't want to run due to unsatisfied dependencies. Do I really need to try to fix all the dependency issues or otherwise install FF1.5 for Windows under Wine? Isn't there an easier way?

If you want to test a page, I suggest you to check it using http://validator.w3.org
Anyhow, what dependencies does it need?

Thanks for the link, I am actively using it. The funny thing is that the page is validating as XHTML Transitional, but users say there are nasty bugs when viewing it in FF1.5 and IE7.0, whereas IE5.5, IE6, FF2.0 and Opera 9.23 show it in a proper way.

However, I am asking about a different thing. How do I actually install FF1.5 on my Gutsy box? I think I'll manage to isolate it form FF2.0 so that it doesn't corrupt my profile, but how can I get it running here? After downloading the latest version of FF1.5 for i686 from official mozilla ftp server and unpacking it I try to run "firefox-bin" file in the new folder and it says following:
./firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Perhaps, I'll spend half an hour trying to satisfy all the dependencies tomorrow and would install firefox 1.5 for Win under Wine if I don't succed.

Thank you, Igor! You have given me a hint to search for firefox1.5 in Ubuntu Dapper repository, and I actually found a deb package here: ftp://ftp.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/f/firefox/firefox_1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.13~prepatch070731-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

Unfortunately, it seems that there is no simple way of installing it in parallel to firefox2.0 on Ubuntu. In fact, the .deb installer refuses to do so and warns about a number of files from my current installation that would be overwritten in such a case.

From this point I see three solutions. The first is to try to register a new user only for firefox1.5, which I wouldn't do. The second is to try to figure out how to install all the files by hand, which I am too lazy to do as well. The last one is to download firefox1.5 for Windows and run it under Wine, and that's my next step. Unfortunately.

P.S. If only Ubuntu had a "slot feature" of Gentoo Portage! Mmm...
