Ok, so you boot from the live cd and after you select "start or install" it stops saying:
/bin/sh/: can't access tty: job control turned off

Does it also show some error with "ata" in it?

Anyway lets try that:
- instead of selecting "start or install" press F6 key for other options
- type 'e' to edit boot options
- move to the line with kernel (longest line) and type 'e' again
- move to the end of line and add "all_generic_ide" after a space
- press enter and boot

There are some other things you can try to add there, but this helps most often.

What version of ubuntu do you have? If the start screen looks like this: http://www.ridinglinux.org/2007/04/02/installing-ubuntu-edgy-eft-610-on-hp-dc7700-pc/, then you probably have Edgy Eft 6.10, and there is a newer one -- Feisty Fawn 7.04.

Adding all_generic_ide at the end of this line (after a space) would disable some functions that don't work with some disks.

Can you help with this problem?
