Abhinav,

Do yourself a favor and get an external modem such as Trendnet TFM-560X from PC Connection, COMP USA.
I just received mine yesterday and it is literally plug and play. There are no drivers to load. All you need to do is call up a terminal window and enter $ sudo wvdial. Once you may your internet connection, leave the terminal window open and click on the your browser, Firefox of whatever. I guarantee you'll see Ubuntu the way the designers intended it to be. Also, the US Robotics version though pricey is a another option. Check the documentation of whatever external modem you'll be purchasing. It must explicitly state that it will support "Linux". The Trendnet version definitely does and is written on the box. Good Luck.
