Upgrade Ubuntu give error

Asked by oddvar

I have reinstalled Dapper since that is the only Ubuntu that give a screen resolution and handle the graphic card in a reasonable way.
The card is a Nvidia gforce 7100, and all except Dapper have big troubles handle it.

At present time, with Dapper, I have a screen resolution 1280x1024. Furthermore the game Supertux function perfect, though witn none of the newer updates. I have used just Supertux to measure how the newer Ubuntu (Edgy, Feisty) are dealing with Supertux and graphics.
In both Feisty I get a screen resolution 1024x860 OR 1280x1024. I have booted from the Feisty CD 4 times now to see what happen.
First and 3rd time I got 1024x860, 2nd and 4th time 1280x1024.
But for all is the same problem: Supertux run in very slow motion, and cant be used!

From earlier I know also programs like xawtv and Gyachi dont have webcam support when run from Feisty or Edgy, but it function in Dapper.

My question is how can I make a backup of the hardware profile in Dapper to diskette, and replace the non-functional Feisty hardware profile
with the functional Dapper profile?

I have already done many things to make my hardware usable in Feisty, including downloading and compiling drivers from Nvidia as described, but none of these give a solution that function. The only is Dapper, even harware info only mention Nvidia as provider, and all PCI has status unknown.
But it function!

A lot changes with Gutsy regarding display configuration. It's beta, but if you got through compiling drivers, you can probably handle it. (After installing check the new panel: System-->Administration-->Screens and Graphics.)

Sorry for a simple doubt, but did you try the Restricted Drivers Manager in Feisty?

I don't think it's possible to just take your hardware setup, too much changes between dapper and feisty. Your best bet would be probably saving just /etc/xorg.conf (Check there if you at least use the same driver with both releases.)

Yes, 18th October, you can find full schedule here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyReleaseSchedule.

You could even upgrade now: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades, but that's not recommended unless you're familiar with linux.
