From a quick search of the internet I have found numerous other people with the same situation as you. What distribution of Ubuntu are you using? (dapper, edgy or feisty). That motherboard is known to have issues with Dapper but will work with feisty and should work with edgy.

thanks for replying alan...well,i don't know what distribution it is...on the cd cover it is written version 6.06 LTS
after going through similar questions on this site i tried booting using noacpi noapic commands.
what it showed on screen was the following:
[17179569.184000]BIOS BUG,no explicit IRQ entries,using default mptable(tell your h/w vendor)
i'm new to linux.

6.06 is the "Dapper" Alan was referring to. You need to get a more recent version. The latest is 7.04, although 7.10 is in "beta" (testing) now and is to be released in October.

Exactly, you need to download the Feisty Fawn version 7.04 which supports your motherboard

Actually, before you start downloading the latest version you should wait while I take a look atthe problem. it may not be limited to 6.06 after all. I will see if there is a way around this issue and get back to you.

You may need to use this CD

http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso

I was not able to find any information that could clear the issue up properly except for some people saying it is now supported and working but other saying the opposite.

Hope this helps
