Boot on Live CD error message: "unknown key word in config file". Could not fine kernal image.

Asked by jonesjrjohn

I downloaded Ubuntu 7.04. Check totals are OK. Burned the image to CD.

When I attempt to boot from CD, I get the following error message:

"Unknown key word in config file... Could not find kernal image.

The boot up stops at that point.

When the live CD gets to the stage where you select a boot option press "F6" and you will see that a line of text that can be edited appears at the lower part of the screen, there is quite a lot but you only need to make one small change as follows:

where it says "boot=casper" all you have to do is change it to read "boot=/casper/vmlinuz". Immediately after that you should see "initrd=/casper/initrd.img". Don't make any other changes and then press enter to start the live cd with your changes added.

This will only need to be done when using the live CD, it is a bug in one of the utilities on the live CD and will not affect the installed system.

Let me know how you get on.

My bios are set to boot first from the CD. I do not see a boot option. I tried pressing F6. The results are the same.

See below error message from the attempt to boot from the CD.:

"IsoLinux 3.11 Debian - 2007-03-12 Copyright (c) 1994 - 2005 H Peter Anvin.

Unknown key world in config file
Missing parameter in config file
Could not find kernel image: linux
boot:"

Thank you for your response.

I am not referring to the BIOS screen. It is a little hard to explain when you don't understand what I mean but I will try..

When you insert the CD and the computer starts booting, the CD contents are loaded and you are presented with a menu as in this link:

http://www.ubuntu.com/include/testing/flight5/gfxboot-big.png

It is at THIS screen that you must press F6 and make the changes to the line of text that appears as I described earlier, here it is again anyway:

where it says "boot=casper" all you have to do is change it to read "boot=/casper/vmlinuz". Don't make any other changes to what is displayed or it won't work, then press enter to continue, Ubuntu will now boot correctly. (hopefully).

Please let me know how you get on.

Strange that you don't see that screen, I thought that the error you experience could only happen after that screen. Anyway, you may need to try the alternative install CD, it's a text based GUI however so won't be _quite_ as easy to use as the main install system on the live cd.

you can download the Alternative install system from here:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso
