Marketing

Asked by rainmaker

If one goes by the papal arrogance of the canonical members (is that what you call yourselves) I wonder what marketing you practice. Do you read the arrogance in your replies when you speak of Ubuntu being for the common man.

what do you mean papal arrogence. What has Canonical Ltd. got to do with the church?, and yes Ubuntu is basically Linux for the common man. We practice marketing, through word-of-mouth, and i believe a small dell advert. Otherwise Ubuntu has been mentioned in the news. Such as BBC, i myself have seen it being presented in computing shows several times.

"Linux for human beings" is not a proclamation that all other distributions are inferior. Instead, it is a goal--the Ubuntu project was set up to create a stable, interesting Linux distribution that was simple and easy to use, and "just works". For example, a default installation takes about 30 minutes and includes a web browser, email client, office suite, graphics editing software, music and video players, instant messaging client, and a few games. There is only one of each type of program, and software can be added or removed using the simple Add/Remove software option.

This was in contrast to other distributions which tend to install many programs of the same type, which can be confusing to a new user which is not familiar with any of these tools. In addition, work is done to make Ubuntu look pleasant and easy to use. By and large, the response has been very positive by many who have wanted to try Linux but had problems in the past. In addition, many who never thought to try Linux have been pleased by their experience with Ubuntu.

It is not clear what exactly offends you about the tagline, or what replies you read that seemed arrogant. I apologize if you were offended, and hope it was simply a misunderstanding.

Like many my experience with computers began with shooting alien ships, word star and Prince of Persia. Apple came in and went out as far hype was concerned. I have no great love for Microsoft operating systems, having to load firewalls, spyware and root kit removers, but, give the man his due. Users like me progressed through the various versions of the Windows operating system, I settled with XP.
It was just that I raised a question somewhere in these forums with regard to windows and got that response we don't do windows. Went through many of your answers and saw that most times you get rubbed the wrong way when we mention windows.
Accept it, that home users like me, who do some work beside, have become familiar with that system and there is some acceptance to its shortfalls. Its ease of operation to someone unfamiliar with programming is an advantage (makes me look brilliant!).
If it is marketing you are looking at just key in the word windows to search for all your answers to the term.
Why keep us away if you want us there!
