Total GNOME crash (after tour of themes)

Asked by Tommy Hoyer

After touring some of the appearance themes, I was unable to relocate the window buttons to the upper left, or return to the original color theme. Trying ' metacity --replace '
broke all GUI control, and the CLI as well; there was no GUI at all, the CL was gone, showing crap on all arrow keys
and the Sytem> Administration> sys monitor had no help. Also, the window borders were missing or partial; there literally was nothing graphical that worked. Control keys also did not work. Only a fully hard power reboot worked. A suggestion to use Ambiance theme somehow restored the left side window buttons.

After recovering the original theme (or very nearly), the color bar of the current on top window is not always rendered rightly. Sometimes the bright white from the backround windows is in place instead, and that can be partial from time to time. More likely to happen after the auto display dim.
