CD doesn't pass during install

Asked by Rob630

I am an experienced Windows user and have even run my own business selling repairing and installing etc.

In the last while I have played with UBCD and UBCD4Windows and have some experience with CD-ROM Burning, Images etc.

I have installed VMware in my WinXP system and been playing with Open Suse, Ubuntu, and Knoppix. I decided to install Ubuntu on my HDD as I was able to network it easily with my Host system, lots of software packages ... I like it. I burned my image to a CD and part way through the install it fails my CD media. In fact Open Suse will not finish starting up, Knoppix Will not complete booting! VMware OK with phyical CD Media, but not in real life! I am using an Asus A7V8X-X mainboard with an AMD Seperon 2200+ 756 Mb Ram
I usually run Boot Magic with 3 MS OS's. I Imaged them and wiped the dirve clean to let Ubuntu Install have its way, no go, the CD doesn't pass muster, infact even a Qparted live CD will not finish booting. I create odd duck Boot CD's all the time, and they work. I am really lost and am completely Linux Cherry.

Thanx for taking my windy Problem

Since the problem occurs with several CDs, the problem is probably with the CD-ROM drive in the machine you are installing on. It's either dirty or broken.

Try replacing the CD-ROM drive, or swapping in one that you know is in good working order. Alternatively, you could try a drive lens cleaner.

 Dear Gabriel;
Thankyou for your response, I was unable to replace my CD-DVD, but, with
your advice I figured a dirty DVD unit would really write weak CD. I cleaned
the unit and burned the image with Alcohol 120% at the slowest speed I
could. The result is I have just booted into Ubuntu. It installed Grub for
me ( I made a 12 GB spce for the install ) I have yet to try my XP ... But
I am up to date on my Images. The updates are downloading as I wirte this. I
am thrilled that my Network card was automatically detected, I heard the
distinct Ubuntu startup sound as the Desktop loaded, so my on board sound
card was detected! Thankyou once again.

HELP! Iam trying to install UBUNTU 5.10 onto a new Intel motherboard Pentium 4 , dual core 3.4ghz system with a SATA 320 GB hard drive and 2 mg of DDR2 memory. My video card is an ATI Radeon X1600pro with 512 of DDR2 memory. I have a 3.5 floppy and a DVD 16X, both of which are working properly.

I have tried both the full install and the live CD but get the same error message.

failed to start X server (your graphical interface)

Xserver is now disabled

I have not been able to install any drivers for the Radeon card, my Intel motherboard or any peripherals. i tried installing Windows XP pro but it returned an error message as well!

I would much prefer Ubuntu over windows XP as an OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
