You are under gnome? If so have you installed Ubuntu restricted extras package?

Some more explanation on installing these is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Ogg should just work, it's not restricted, what program are you trying to use?

I've never had any problems playing theora (ogg video) using just the default totem totem (totem-gstreamer,and totem-mozilla for firefox if needed). Sometimes it may seem to not work if the file is corrupted.

Are you trying to play some publicly available video? Maybe lets try with something from: http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/List_of_Theora_videos (official theora site links to this). Tell me what you've chosen and i'll try the same.

If you're using feisty, make sure you have "totem-gstreamer" and "gstreamer0.8-theora" packages installed. Use synaptic, adept, or just type in terminal "sudo apt-get install totem-gstreamer gstreamer0.8-theora". You need to have universe repositories enabled for this to work (System-->Administration-->Software Sources).

Can you help with this problem?
