clean up ubuntu boot

Asked by Mervyn Mitchell

I tried ( and failed to install Debian to an empty hard drive - it wouldn't /couldn't setup Grub) and subsequently have had problems booting Ubuntu 7.04 (AMD64 Athlon X2 Dual Core ) I have Windows XP also
The system hangs after Grub appears to start - not every time - it appears to recover after it cleans up a Hard Drive in Recovery mode!! Then it fails next time both on warm re-boot or cold boot
I have two SATA drives with plenty of space and 2GB Memory
Can I use the Ubuntu install disc to clean up the system or Grub.
i.e. can I do an Upgrade Install?
If so how?
Else what do I do?
regards
Mervyn

Yes you can use the live cd to reinstall the grub in your hard drive.

1. Run the live CD
2. Mount your Ubuntu partition(in nautilus Go->Computer)
3. Open a terminal, and: sudo chroot /media/sd*(you_drive)
5. sudo grub-update
4. sudo grub-install hd0

Can you help with this problem?
