can't play audio CDs

Asked by bradley

my computer is unable to mount or play audio CDs...
but it can mount and display the contents of data CDs and DVDs.
i have the all (i am pretty sure) restricted formats installed and DMA is turned on,
which aparently is the default in dapper anyhow.
i also have no problem playing DVD video.

when i go to menu>system>disks the CD seems to be recognized. it shows the info (CD length and number of tracks) but it won't play it if i press the play button that is available there. that being said a CD icon never appears on the desktop and if i try to use the mount panel app it is unable to mount it and, of course, none of my music players can recognize it.

i am using Xubuntu from a fresh install on a toshiba satellite 5200

more info:

i can force an audio cd to play (inconsistently and with glitchy playback) using xfmedia.
the drive is still considered unmounted, no icon appears on the desktop and if i try to get more info about the album using xfmedia the drive (and xfmedia) locks up. no other media program can recognize a disk.

Similar thing happening with me on both ubuntu dapper and now also on edgy after a fresh install of 6.10. Only audio cds wont play although they mount and some apps such as grip and sound juicer will show tracks and retrieve track info from cddb, and only sound juicer will play songs with scratchy jumpy clicky noise. Otherwise audio cds don't play. However, I had success importing audio tracks with grip although painfully slow X0.2 speed with paranoia enabled. (using Hitachi CDR 7930, ES 1969 solo 1 audio card)

I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and I can play pre-recorded music CD's in sound jucier, Rythmbox, or the CD player, but for only for 1 or 2 songs... After that, the CD ejects on it's own.

I've downloaded the codecs from Automatix and installed them manually using the GDebi Package installer. The last CD I tried, ejected 2 minutes into the first song.

I'm wondering about my 256 RAM. After using sound juicer, I can't start it again without a reboot. When I try to shut down, the process is slow or appears to be locked up, requiring a manual power down. All other Ubuntu programs are running stable and O.K.

Thanks in advance for your help...
