Can't log into Ubuntu AGAIN

Asked by Rachel Mock

Today I tried to login to Ubuntu and I got the message...:

The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager were not properly installed. Please contact your computer administrator.

....and was returned to the login page. I had this problem yesterday and entered the following command...:

sudo apt-get clean; sudo chmod 0777 /tmp; sudo dpkg --configure -a; sudo mkdir /varlib/gconf/default/; sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

...and rebooted the computer and it worked. Today when it happened again, I tried the same command and it did not work. Can someone please help me resolve this issue? All I want is to get my files and photos off of Ubuntu and go back to Windows Vista where I don't get so many problems all the time.

Question: Is your ubuntu partition full? This problem occurs when a disk is full, or nearly full. The command sequence you entered above would have freed up a little space, but yes, the problem will return.

Answer: You can copy your data off your ubuntu partition using a liveCD. OTher than that, you will need to free up space on your ubuntu partition using the recovery console.

Hi. Probably the easiest way is to boot via LiveCD then browse to the directory where your files are. As for the problem with your power manager, was there any changes before this problem occurred?

Can you help with this problem?
