Connect Ubuntu Laptop with HDMI Panasonic TV

Asked by Martin Joiner

I have just successfully managed to effectively use my Panasonic TV as a screen for my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and there were some tricky steps along the way. I therefore wish to share my findings with the on-line community now...

1) Connect the laptop to the TV using the HDMI cable and set the TV to the relevant HMDI input channel. Start an MP3 playing to allow easy sound testing. [At this point no image is visible on the TV]
2) Go to SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > MONITORS [Upon loading I found an image appeared on the TV but no sound. The image was also "cropped" which basically means the mouse pointer can disappear off the top and bottom of the screen]
3) Fix the cropped image... Using your Panasonic TV remote control press MENU > SETUP > OTHER SETTINGS and turn the "Picture Overscan" option to "OFF" [I now have a full image of the desktop but no menu bar and still no sound]
3) On the laptop go to SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > SOUND then choose the HARDWARE tab, select INTERNAL AUDIO and change the profile to "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output". [The sound has now stopped coming out my laptop speakers and begun coming through the TV speakers]
4) This final step is optional really as we've achieved our goal of getting sound and vision on the TV. However if you want the menu bars and the dock visible on the TV as if the TV is your main monitor you need to do one more thing: As before enter the "Monitors" window via SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > MONITORS and turn off your laptop monitor leaving only the HDMI TV connection. [The system is now working like a desktop computer with a giant external monitor, neatly connected via a single cable]

You can now watch Hi def YouTube videos on a glorious 32" screen. Grin.

If I have been too vague on any points, please post a comment and I will endeaver to correct this post to clarify asap.

I followed the instructions at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Hence the output above. It seems that I cannot hear any sound now though.
