Boot up screen resolution

Asked by Bernard Hill

When booting up 6.06 I get the message, 'out of range' with figures which include 86Hz which is outside the range of my Sony S73 monitor. This clears after about 10 secs. and then the booting completes with the screen at my configured resolution and colour depth. I am concerned about driving the monitor even for a short while out of range. How can I change the boot up monitor configuration to keep the frame rate below the permitted 75Hz?

Try passing to the bootloader vga=791 parameter.
If you still have problems, you can choose a different video mode. You can find them here: http://snipurl.com/unfj

Many thanks for your suggestion, but that does not solve my problem. The 'out
of range' message appears after the initial boot and occurs just after the
KDE manager has been invoked. Is there a default setting of the KDE manager
before it reads my settings for the VDU? If so, how do I change those default
settings please?

You should try to run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. If you choose "medium" or "advanced", you should be able to set the right frame rate.
Once you have completed this step, launch dexconf in order to update X.org configuration file and restart X.

I have done the above as suggested but it has not cured the problem. That only
seems to have effect when the desktop is booting up. The false frame rate is
being set just before the desktop has taken over control. When I launched
dexconf nothing seemed to happen.

I don't get this problem when booting into SUSe 10.1.

Thank you for your help, anyway.

Best wishes,
Bernard Hill

Could you please append your xorg.conf file?

I hope that you find the file you asked for; as there were several of them I
have sent them all.

As you have probably realised by now, I am rather inexperienced about the
inner workings of computers, I just find them very useful for what I want to
do.

I do very much appreciate your time and interest in my problem.

Do you have the same problem with LiveCD?

Yes, but for a much shorter time; only about 3 seconds. The out of range frame
rate is 82Hz not 86 as I stated previously. I thought I had better correct
this information in case it is significant.

Try to use this settings in your Monitor section:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Sony S73"
        Option "DPMS"
        HorizSync 30-70
        VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection

You may want to disable frame buffer too by turning off UseFBDev option in Device section.

Thank you for continuing with your interest. I have checked that the xorg.conf
has figures as you suggest, except that the specifcation for this monitor is
28-80kHz and 48-75Hz and I have set to these. The UseFBDev option has now been
set to ´false´. The option DPMS was already set.

Sorry to report that the out of range message still diplays during booting.

The display sequence when booting is as follows:
The first screen is a graphic screen at a reasonable definition something like
1024x768 (it could be 1280x1024) during the initial boot while the file
system is checked and essential drivers are installed. After this the screen
blanks and changes to a text screen at something like 800x600 which also
shows the previous messages and then goes on with futher checks etc. The
screen then blanks and the error message about being out of range is
displayed for about 12 secs. The actual figures shown are 36.8kHz and 82Hz.
It is a little odd that it does diplay that message for so long before
blanking out completely. Perhaps some safety circuit is holding the actual
signal from the display. After that the screen blanks again before displaying
a graphic screen at 1280x1024, my chosen resolution, and the last stage of
booting is completed. I assume that this is the normal sequence apart from
the error message.

Please accept my sincere thanks for your help with this as I do want to
continue with Ubuntu, it is a superb system. The way Ubuntu is going it
could, in my opinion, prove to be the most significant challenge to MS of all
the Linux systems. The way that the programs can be installed and updated
appeals to me, as I am sure it will to many ´computer workings´ illiterate
computer users. SUSE has been almost completely abandoned by me.

These are technical specification for your monitor: http://snipurl.com/utzs
You should try to adjust refresh rate and depth accordingly.

If you can, you should try to obtain a working copy of xorg.conf from SuSE and use it with Ubuntu. I know, it's just a stupid hack, but it could solve your problems until a *real* solution comes out.

And don't forget: keep using Ubuntu! :)

Many, many thanks for your interest and help with my problem which you will be
pleased to note has now been resolved. On the Community Docs page
BinaryDriversHowto/ATI there is full information for the installation of the
fglrx module. I followed the instructions to the letter and this has resolved
the problem. Obviously the driver for the card was not installed in the first
place and this driver from the restricted repository is driving the card
correctly.

I am only sorry that I am not sufficiently computer literate to play a full
part within the Ubuntu community, but perhaps my experience with the ATI
Radeon X600 Pro, will help someone else who is having similar difficulties.
They should also be encouraged by this display of continuing help which you
have provided. If I can follow the instructions given, anyone else should be
able to.

It would be good if the messages could be edited to leave just the relevant
information on display.

Best wishes,
Bernard Hill

As this problem has now been resolved satisfactorily, it is time to
close this support request. How is that done? There is no guidance on
the site.
