keyboard locks

Asked by bsmith624

I am trying to run Ubuntu 7.04 on my desktop. I have downloaded the iso file, burned it to a disk and have sucsessfully ran the Live version on my HP Pavilion notebook. I love the fact that it works better and is more stable than the OS the notebook was "designed" to run. My problem is when I attempt to boot the Live version on my desktop. I am able to use my keyboard at the initial Ubuntu menu that allows me to choose my boot option. However, between that point and when Ubuntu finishes loading, the keyboard locks up. I am using a ps2 "CompuUSA" keyboard and have tried switching out with a ps2 Compaq keyboard. I don't believe it is hardware realted, but I am to new to Ubuntu to know where to look to see if there are any conflicts or how to resolve them. I am able to use the mouse only and have used the device manager to send info to developers, but I don't know if they will respond. I copied/pasted individual letters and numbers to enter my email address. Does anyone know if I install Ubuntu on my hard drive, will that resolve the problem? My goal is to have a dual boot since some apps and hardware are not yet supported in Linux. I have used different Live versions of Knoppix with no keyboard issues, so I know most of what I have works in Linux.

Try disabling USB keyboard/mouse support, enabling "USB legacy support" or disabling "Assign USB IRQ" in bios.

You may find some hints on what's failing in logs (System-->Administration-->System Log; there are more logs than just the default ones, just open them). It would be best to look at "boot" log probably, but it's empty due to a bug.

For debugging i would suggest using an on screen keyboard (should be preinstalled, enable somewhere in accessibility options; in gutsy it's System-->Preferences-->Universal Access-->Assistive Technology Preferences-->Preferred Applications-->Accessibility-->Mobility).

Can you help with this problem?
