Buffer I/O error on device FD0, Logical Block 0

Asked by Yiftos

I have this issue
178.980000 Buffer I/O error on device FD0, Logical Block 0
212.896000 Buffer I/O error on device FD0, Logical Block 0
Trying unsucessfully to install Ubuntu 7.04 from the live cd on a Compaq EVO N600c, PIII-1.2ghz, 256MB RAM and 38GB hard drive. This laptop does not have a floppy Drive installed. I tried disabling the floppy in the BIOS but the live CD immediatley balks that something is turned off and crashes.
With floppy enabled, The live CD takes over 15 minutes to load and once started seems to be working. However, when I proceed with the install it hangs there for hours before opening a blank install window. In the meantime, the the dvd drive is pounding hard and never seems to write to the hard drive. I know the hard drive is accessable becuase with the cd live, I was able to use the GED partition and manually partiton the drive. Now for testing, Windows XP installed flawlessly which is unusual for laptops.

Can anyone Help?? should I try the alternative CD.

Maybe disabling floppy in bios and adding a "nofloppy" boot parameter would help (F6 on the first menu).

Take a look at the end of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/97306 and try to append nofloppy parameter at the end of the kernel options row (from Ubuntu install menu).

Hello everyone,
Im sorry I took so long to get back had to take care of business. But I was able to install the Fiesty 7.04 using the alternative CD! The Debian text version install worked flawlessly and very fast, even with the floppy disabled in the BIOS. The live CD version would not even start when the floppy was disabled.

Yes, did try the nofloppy appended to kernal as an option. The live CD did very slowly load just like before but the install still would never write to the hard drive. The install window would open blank and the DVD rom drive would be hammering away as if in a loop for h ours.

Thanks everyone for your support. We did not resolve it but at least had a work around.
