synaptic or update manager not working

when I try to run either programs they wont load. in the terminal i ran synaptic and got the following:

eddie@eddie-desktop:~$ sudo synaptic
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
eddie@eddie-desktop:~$
can anyone give me some light on the problem

I am running feisty 7.04

Please , try: "sudo apt-get update" (apt is what synaptic uses to the its job). The output from this should explain more.

What GNOME theme are you using? Did you try to switch to the standard theme called "human"?
