As far as i remember, i just downloaded stepmania package and extracted it into the opt folder, changing permissions and created a symlink to my songs folder (the one i use with DWI under windows) but i didn't used it too much, it demands a lot of computer resources if you don't have a real AGP or better video card...

Download the linux binary version (it should have an tar.gz extension).
Double click the archive, archive manager should appear. Extract it to let's say desktop.
You should be able to run it by again simply double-clicking on the "stepmania" file inside the extracted folder.

No problem :)
After double clicking the downloaded file click extract, select Desktop if it's not already selected and click extract in the lower right corner. (After that you may close the archive manager and also delete the downloaded file.)
There should be a new folder on your desktop. Enter it by double clicking. And double click on the stepmania (with a diamond yes).
If this fails, there are some things to help, but somewhat complex.

Open terminal: Accessories-
Change directory to stepmania (you can copy & paste this into terminal):
cd Desktop/
Try to run stepmania from terminal:
./stepmania
And tell me what it returned (again best copy & paste the other way).

Try stopping all sound programs (music players etc.). If this doesn't help and your desktop manager is KDE (many things begin with K) then you may have to stop the KDE sound server. Type in terminal:
killall artsd

I mean quit all sound programs. And i've noticed this doesn't necessarily be kde, on my gnome artsd is also running. So just try stopping.

Ok, maybe my way of getting rid of this sound server wasn't a bit too brutal :) My setting is a bit different so can't test it properly.
You should be able to just restart and everything should get back to how it was before. We were just stopping one or more processes, nothing really uncommon.
A more civilized way to do the same thing is to go to System-
After stopping this sound server, try running stepmania again from terminal and show me what it outputs.

Hmm, first try:
ps -ef | grep artsd
If this returns a line with artsd, then it's still running. You are under kde, right?
Maybe you use pulseaudio? If so you'll have to disable it.
Go to System-

All this is because stepmania would like to have an exclusive access to your sound card.
You can go another way, and force it to use software playback:
artsdsp ./stepmania
With artsd enabled this time. But this may not work as well as giving it what it wants.

It fails on creating a directory, you may try creating the directory for it:

Even if we can't use artsd to make it work (thanks to this bug or not), still we should be able provide it with exclusive card access. Have you tried disabling ESD in System-
There are still some tricks to try. Yesterday i've been helping someone else to get stepmania working and it worked without any trouble. We may come back to this at later time if you wish.

It can't create same same directory twice, it's ok.
I can reproduce your problem by running rhytmbox, make sure you quit all such things.
Try restarting and just after that open terminal and type:
cd Desktop/
./stepmania
(Same as before.)
If this doesn't work could you please maximize the terminal window, type "ps -ef" and paste the output here?

Sound initialized correctly. Now it's telling you that you don't have hardware accelerated graphics.
Maybe your graphics card needs drivers from its manufacturer to provide acceleration. Try enabling proprietary drivers for your card through System-
