how do I disable startup hard drive test?

Asked by Sideburn

I've installed a Ubuntu/Vista dual boot on my HP dv9000 with some initial problems...

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+question/9655

Now Ubuntu wants to check my hard drive again. It get stuck at various stages of the test and never finishes. The BIOS HDD followes through, but it doesn't effect the Ubuntu test...

Is it some way to disable the startup HDD test? Right now I can't access Ubuntu at all, and I really need some files from it.

I've tried both Kernel 2.6.20-16 and 2.6.20-15, AND in recovery mode, but nothing works...

The quicker the answer, the bigger my smile!

Cheers

If you just need some files from it, you can boot using the liveCD to gain access, you can also check the volume with the liveCD, then reboot and all should be well. After you reboot following the check, you can install 'autofsck' which is able to disable the boot time check and do it when you shutdown instead, by default ubuntu checks every 30 boots.
Thanks,
David P.

@ David:

Thanks for taking the time to answer... I can't find 'autofsck', either in add/remove apps or synaptic pack man... Also tried fsck, but that seems to be some kind of disk mount daemon... I would like to disable the startup HDD check, since I have a BIOS utility and also have a small allergy against automatic chinga-majinga...

@ Mike:

Thank you very much, that solved the påroblem! The HDD check started, and was able to finish! :-)
I used all of the switches, and added them to the Grub's menu.lst...
When I have some mmore time I will investigate what they really mean, and if I need everyone...

Thanks a lot, both of you!
