double java installation 5 and 6. how remove 5

Asked by lolke

Hi,

I've got both 5 and 6 on my system. Can I safely remove 5 (without disrupting anything) and how do I do that?
(for instance I know I got Firefox to work with Java 6, so that one should be fine, are there other potential problems that I should be aware of?)

Thanks,
Lolke

There are many programs based on java, so it's hard to guess if you have anything installed that needs it. Not very probable that there are many depending on specifically version 5. Moreover it is not a critical part of the system, so even if something stops to function, you should be able to reinstall it.

You will probably want to use synaptic to remove the packages (sun-java5-xxx). When you mark something for removal it will tell what else will be removed, so you can check if anything important will be lost. Note also that there are many different implementations of java virtual machine, so i'm just guessing you're using the one from Sun.

 * Install galternatives using synaptic or apt.
 * Then start galternatives and select there java 6 as the dafault java. (Check if you have the gnu 1.4 java version too in galternatives.)
 * After setting java 6 as the default there you're able to remove the old ones.
 * If you manually set other options like $JAVA_HOME in the environment variables you must manually fix them.

Thanks Wrwrwr and cablop. I used galternatives to select the default and then uninstalled jvm5 using synaptic. Everything still works.
