laptop problem! upgraded ubuntu 6.06 to ubuntu 7.04

Asked by jody pagulayan

Hello. I got an Acer Extensa 5220 last week when i was in Germany & Ubuntu 6.06 was installed to it. It is my 1st encounter with the Linux-Ubuntu system & I am not really familiar with computer software & programming. I got hold of the Ubuntu 7.04 just before I left Germany. Everything was working great until I installed the 7.04 when I went back to the Philippines. Now all the text or letters are converted to boxes & really dont know what to do next!

I tried to ask help from colleagues but none of them are familiar with the linux-ubuntu system. I need a step-by-step instruction on how to reformat my computer and install the 7.04 version.

Thank you very much.

you may want to check out:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

that should help you through installing ubuntu on your laptop

or you can find a 'screencast' of installing ubuntu (a video that will show you step by step howto install ubuntu) here:
http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/

Hello, thanks for the reply.

I checked the 1st link that u sent me & tried to follow the instructions in the Clean Install/home on separation partition. After booting with Feisty and tried to install it... I got this instead on my screen:

Busybox v1-1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3 -ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands

/bin/sh: can'a access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)

What will be my next move?

Hello !

It is a serious problem of Ubuntu not finding correctly your hardware. If possible, you might want to try another version of Ubuntu (7.10 is coming out next month, if you can afford to download an ISO image).

Regards,
Benoît
