Install on new hard drive

Asked by Jack

I would like to install Ubuntu onto a separate hard drive instead of a dual boot configuration, or partioning an existing drive. I am downloading the newest version now. That hard drive has a Windows installation on it now. Does anyone have a how-to on this?
Thanks
Jack

Most secure would be unplugging your main drive for a while installing and then plugging back.
You should be able to choose the system to boot from BIOS, using boot order.

Otherwise you may want to make the disk you want to install on the first in the boot order and just install. Just make sure to install on the right disk. Again choosing the system would look the same (that's why they invented things like grub :)

It doesn't matter too much what's on the drive you're installing to, you can choose "use entire disk" during the installation and it will get wiped then.

Grub is a nice thing. However, even if you overwrite your windows boot loader, it shouldn't be too hard to get it back, provided you have a bootable cd for windows. Just don't overwrite whole windows.

If all that sounds too much for you, you may try wubi:

Can you help with this problem?
