Hi enyatara,

In linux, like any OS, if a package is not provided for your distribution, but you can get the source, you are able to compile the program by following those steps:

tar zxvf filename.tar.gz
then you change the directory to the newly extracted one, usually filename/
cd filename/
then, usually just type
./configure
then type
make
if everything went well in the previous steps just type
sudo make install
if everything went well in the previous steps just type

There is usually either a README or INSTALL file with the source, you can have more details on how to install the soft, the requirement ... in this file.

You will find this article of interest: http://linux.about.com/od/linux101/l/blnewbie3_5_1.htm
Hope this helps

First of all you can use Synaptic and see if the program is in the lists. Be sure to enable multiverse and universe repositories before anything.

http://www.monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

If you downloaded the package (we'll name it pack1) from the internet and can't find a way to install it, try running

alien pack1

It will convert the package to a .deb package (we'll name it pack1deb). After that (or if your package is already a .deb) run

dpkg -i pack1deb

That should sort things out for 95% of your package problems.

Hi There Chantra.
This would proborly solve my problem if I knew exactly what too do.
I have found that most people who are very proficient at installing and running a particular OS
will always give for a beginner instructions that for a newbie appear as a code of sorts.
If someone said install disk and go to a ubutu program and install or change or whatever that would help.
To start with tar zvxf file name.tar.gz really does not help I have no idea still as what to do.
I do thank you for help but maybe one can see the problems a newbe has when in reality for me windows is so easy can install and program nearly all with mouse just a little keyboard work.
I will try a bit more but need more time on how to understand how to do things in unbuntu.

sorry, I thought you say you had the software provided by the vendor.

If the only software, is for windows, you won't be able to use it under ubuntu. However, if you give moreinformation about your PCI card, they might be something in ubuntu which will suit your need.

HI there Chandra.
The pci card was provided by the server but the makes AVM have given me a linux program for this pci card. This program in on a cd.
If I received info that said start linux look for whatever program I need to copy this program fron cd and then what too do I might get somewhere.
The original program for pci card was in german I went to maker and they suplied a program in english and also gave me a program for linux in english if only I knew how to install it.
Maybe you can now understand my problem.
I do thank you for taking the trouble to at least read and understand my problem.

It's quite probable that you don't need the disk, there are special packages for ubuntu for avm hardware (specifically avm-fritz-firmware package; should be on ubuntu cd).

So, first try System-->Administration-->Restricted Drivers Manager. Maybe you can enable your card there.

If you are sure you need to use the cd, please let us know what you can find on it. Knowing what's the model of your card, wouldn't hurt either.

Yeah, knowing what exact card you have will help us greatly in providing you the right solution.

If you don't have ubuntu installed yet, you could use ubuntu livecd and see if it is supported out of the box.

you might as well find those 2 pages of interest:

Hi there all.
My PCI card is AVM 330 PCI. Origanally made for german market.
I went to avm and they gave me program in english,at same time I asked for the program for linux which they gave and sits on a cd.
I have tried different version of linux and the problem is always the same.
How do I install a linux program from a cd disc to linux.
I have tried all linux libraries and repositories and non have this program as is a program for a specific pci card.
I have the linux program just have to know how to install into linux.
Here is my problem with help installing.
Someome will say tar, and whatever, but helps me not a lot.
If someone said go to whatever program in linux and then do whatever then I might get somewhere.
My daughter also getting into computers and if I cannot solve this simple problem may turn her off linux as in many ways windows is easier.

I had a some trouble identifying your card, it's this one: http://www.dsl-today.de/hardware/t-online/dsl-teledat-330-pci-card-angebot.php
? (Sorry for the link, couldn't find anything more suitable.)

That would fall under PnP AVM cards, so should be supported by mISDN. Can you confirm that you can't enable your card through Restricted Drivers Manager? I believe AVM provides proprietary, binary drivers for their cards, so that's the default program to use in this case (and that's probably one of the things that makes ubuntu different from other distributions). If this doesn't work you'll have to install manually and this may get quite complex unfortunately.
(In the worst case. :)

The program on the cd may be in different forms, it may be a script, or a package, or source (most probably). So without knowing what's on the cd, it's not possible to give you precise help. You can browse the cd contents by clicking Places-->Computer and double clicking cd-rom or whatever is appropriate. Maybe you'll find a readme file, which would explain much, but at least we could make a use of knowing what files/directories are there.

Hi there Wrwrwr.
You have found the right dsl pci card.
I have the linux program for this card but have no idea how to install or what to do.
I could send the progran to you if knew where.
Have opened program there is no readme.
If any more suggestions work,I would be on way to getting on line with linux.
I will say I appreciate all the help I get.

Ok there's no readme. Could you write what files and/or directories do you see there? (You can check that under windows too.)

I also would like to know if you already installed ubuntu, or are just planning to? And if this card is your only the possibility to connect to the internet for you, or maybe you have some alternatives (just to easy the setup)?

If you have ubuntu installed, can you go to
Applications->Accessories->Terminal

This will open a terminal, can you type:

$ ls -R /media/cdrom > ~/Desktop/cdrom_listing.txt

And copy and paste the content of this file to this thread.

If you don't have internet access on the machine with ubuntu copy the cdrom_listing.txt to a floppy or usb stick, open it under windows or on a different computer and copy and paste then.

What about connecting from your linux to the internet, possible or you depend on this card?

The idea of a program is somewhat different in linux and windows and that is what is causing some confusion. Usually you assume linux has built in drivers for all your hardware (and this is true in 90% of cases). Unfortunately this means that when something special is needed it may be somewhat more difficult to install then in windows.

Can you help with this problem?
