Hangups in internet DSL connection

Asked by doronb2

hello,
i have Ubuntu on my laptop for some time now and i have a most annoying problem.
i always have hangups in my internet ADSL connection.
i'm using a regular modem that i recieved from my internet provider and in XP i used the usual dialer that windows has.
when i installed ubuntu i managed the internet connection with PPPOECONF and it looked good, username, password and all, yeepee!
but in 10 minuted i disconnected again.
so i press on the "wired connection network" icon -> "Dial up connections" -> "Connect to dsl provider via modem" and i have internet for 10 minuted again.
so on and so on every 10 minutes.

it driving me CRAZY!!
You know how long it tok me to complete the Eclipse installation for example???

i don't know what to do...
i formatted the computer and installed Kubuntu but no good. same problem.

now i have Ubuntu and windows in dual-boot and Ubuntu is disconnecting every 10 minutes but Windows works fine...........

(actually i have to press "disconnect" and then "connect". if i press only "connect" i still can't get to the internet)

PLEASE HELP!

I would recommend to put PPPoE on the modem itself and do not worry about dial up connections. You will need to login to the modem and configure PPPoE in there(Enter your username/password).

I have same trouble with my DSL modem despite I put PPPoE on the modem right after install it in the system, before I connect it to Internet. To cofigure PPPoE on the modem I used software utility in CD which had been provided by modem manufacturer. This CD was in the same box with modem together.

hello... to set up PPPoE on your ADSL Modem refer [1] below

1.https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE

Alternately, Use the software CD provided by the manufacturer of your modem to set up PPPoE or,
Log in to your IP address using a browser(Just as you log on to any website in a browser) with password and change your modem settings...

I think this is network manager issue linked to ip changes somehow. Or some sh.t naming as avahi. In network tools I got 4 names: loopback, eth0, eth1 and eth0 avahi. Whai is weird there is nothing for just eth0 and configure button does not work. And for eth0 avahi there are zeroes for everything, ip, dns or whatever it is. I read through many topics regarding to network problem and tried to do something but I am not familiar with Linux and cannot dig into too dip. Even more, trying to solve this issue in Ubuntu, I lost my dsl connection in Windows XP, hardly brought it up again.
Sorry, gentlemen but I took away your OS, nevertheless it good alternative for Microsoft products. May be next release of Ubuntu will be free of this annoying trouble - no internet connection.

oh, its old.
i solved it (with help from other linux forum) by setting the connection to static ip connection (although i have dynamic ip) and provide 10.0.0.10 as IP ADDRESS and 255.0.0.0 as SUBNET MASK.
don't ask me why but its good now.

I am getting the DSL connection getting dropped when I connect from the system->network Menu.
I see a log in /var/log/syslog as network manager: <info> going to sleep Terminated on signal 15
But I am able to make it stable when I do it from command promt with command pon dsl-provider.
