wireless connection

Asked by DaveB

hello everybody, I'm not new to ubuntu but I'm not technically gifted with computers so any advice I get has to be a step by step guide thanks.
so my problem is I was running a D-Link router connected to the internet by cable. I had a PC connected to the router and ran my laptop wirelessly through the router. everything was working fine until one day the router packed in. I now have a WLAN 11g router and have set up the PC but I'm unable to get my laptop back on the internet with ubuntu. I am able to connect to my new router with my laptop in windows, but not with 7.04 ubuntu. When I follow the help menu I go to System - Administration - Network -Enable wireless - Properties, but then I don't have a box anywhere in this window that saya "enable this connection". I think this is my problem. I have spent many hours trying everythink I can think of with no luck. Any help will be much appreciated.

I don't understand very well: did you set "enable roaming" in the card properties? The very first checkbox in the properties window.

Hi Vincenzo No my "enable roaming mode" is not checked. That's the only check box I have in properties

If you enable roaming, can't you connect to the network using network-manager? Sorry if I am not getting the situation right. I don't have a checkbox to enable the network card, too, but in the preferences there is the "enable roaming" box and stuff to statically configure the card in case I don't want to use network-manager, maybe these are missing on your system?

Vincenzo sorry it took so long to reply I've been working away from my computer. Your last advice worked, I have a strong signal from my router, however now I am being asked for a "PASSPHRASE" I've tried lots of various things and looked at the UBUNTU help menu but am unable to find anything that works. So close yet so far. Any ideas on what is meant by a "PASSPHRASE"? Thanks Dave B.

Do you have WEP or WPA encryption on your router? You need the passphrase for your wireless network.
