Sound Hiss On Ubuntu 6.06

Asked by Luiz Fernando

I have a multi-boot Windows XP/Ubuntu Dapper Drake and my the sound works somewhat poorly in Ubuntu. When I boot my system in Ubuntu it has a loud hiss and low sound volume. When I start on Windows XP(sound works just fine there) and restart to Ubuntu the sound hiss stops but the volume is still very low.

I have an onboard sound board from P5VDC-X motherboard. My system is configured with ALSA and ESD. I tried to mess with the volume control on ALSA but apparently it didn't help me. Is there anything I can try to make my soundboard work fine?

Thanks

There is some general troubleshooting concerning alsa:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/AlsaTips#Fighting_disturbed_sound
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting#Sound_can_be_heard_but_it_is_distorted

However there seem to be some specific problems with your sound card (it's ADI1986A, right?), some possible solutions are here:

This suggests installing alsa 1.0.14 in one place, if you'd decide to do it, getting it from gutsy repositories should be easier than compiling and replacing the driver manually.

Can you help with this problem?
