3D games are windowed

Asked by Joda

Since I've only played two different 3D games (Planet Penguin Racer and Unreal Tournament 1999), I don't know if I can generalize on basis of my problems, but I have a pretty good idea it's the same problem.
Upon around 20-30 minutes of gameplay in the two above-mentioned games, the game suddenly goes from being in full-screen mode, to become windowed. In PPR this gives me now big problem, as all I have to do, is click the window, so I can control Tux again, and after a short while it returns to full-screen mode. However in UT, the shift renders me unable to do anything, being that changing to the desktop or controling the game, leaving me no other option but to restart gdm.

Do anyone have a suggestion as to what could be wrong, and what I can do to fix it? (I have tried to google it)

NB. I'm running on GDM with Compiz Fusion. However it did the same before I installed the full Compiz package, but I guess it's relevant information?

Kind regards

start the game from a terminal(if you can) and watch the output when it goes to windowed mode... I don't own these games so I can't be too much help. IM popups have cause some of my full screen progs to mode switch like that, are you sure something in the background isn't causing it?

Well. I don't get messages when it happens, but I could try to shut down Kopete before starting the game, to see if this causes it.

I'll try it out, and write in here again if it still does it.

Thanks for your help so far.

It wasn't the IM-client, but Compiz. Apparently I had missed the fact, that "Desktop Effects" uses Beryl/Compiz, and was the reason it also did it before I installed the full Compiz Fusion program. So to any other person having the same problem: It's Compiz!
