What is the .exe file called to start installation?

Asked by drden

Hi,
I have an old nec versa (1996) 4050H laptop. P-90 with 40megs ram, 2 gig hdd. This is the 3rd time I have tried to install linux. I am trying Xububtu because of my slow PC specs. I am new to linux but am very used to M$ windows platforms. I can put win95 on it (puke) but would like to try linux again. I have to switch to either cd or 3 1/2 floppy but not at the same time. I cannot boot up with the "live" versions but can boot with syslinux and I have a cd with 98 se boot image that can boot too.

Update... I tried the boot disks with the distro cd. I created c:\linux on my desktop (winXP). I moved rawritexp.exe, sbm.bin, and sbootmgr.dsk. In command prompt i switched to the linux dir and ran the command "rawritexp.exe sbm.bin" as well as "sbootmgr.dsk" it fails to work per the directions. I also tried several others. I did get 1 to work and that was the "old_cd.i" with the "install.1" and "install2" disks to work (debian?) but, again I cannot install.

I have created a boot image CD with Caldera DRDOS 7.05 with the OAK CD driver similar to that on the win98_se boot disk. This driver is compatible with about everything. I created the image then copied it back to a directory. Then I created a cd with the Xubuntu image and used my new boot disk image for a Linux bootable CD. I used nero 6 and I tried the "alternative Xubuntu Images" with both the "live" version and the other. This works and everything's fine but I cannot figure out what the .exe or .bat file that starts the installation. I'm assuming that there a different executable file? I installed the "live version" on my desktop and checked "properties" of the install icon on the desktop and it had "gksudo -desktop %k ubiquity gtku" so I tried that and still not working.

Is there a file to start a normal install? I'm ready to go but need the name of the executable. Why isn't there just an "Install.exe" or "setup.exe" file???

If you have a sugestion for me I would apprechiate it. BTW, I also have a network connection if I could run the install through the network PMCIA card with my cd rom shared on my XP desktop? Can I just copy the whole source cd to a partition on the laptop hd(500 megs, fat16) then run the setup from the hd by just booting up with floppy's? Does anyone know what the executable file is called by doing it this way??? Please...

Thank You.

You don't run a "setup.exe" to install xubuntu, you boot from a cd not into windows.

You need to download the xubuntu "alternate cd" (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/6.06/release/xubuntu-6.06-alternate-i386.iso) , burn it to cd and then rebooting directly from that, you'll need to ensure your BIOS is set to boot from cd.

Uhm looking at that system spec, you'll struggle to use any kind of graphical interface at all. Installing ubuntu-server might be better if you actually want to use a computer with those specifications.

thanks for the re-ply guys.
First I did the alternate... both of them. they dont boot. its a laptop and boots automatically off cd so no bios to change. it only boots with the syslinux. not the newer one. The link says this.

"Smart Boot Manager is on the Breezy install CD, in the /install folder. Otherwise, you can [WWW] download it. (for more information about this, [WWW] click here.)

Now we need to make a boot floppy. To do this, use a utility called [WWW] rawwrite. (for more info about this, [WWW] click here.)

First format the floppy. In windows, open a command prompt and type c:\> format a:

Then use rawrite command: rawrite -f sbootmgr.dsk (rawwritewin.exe sbootmgr.dsk)

Once the boot floppy is created, start the computer."
I cannot get the rawrite to make the sbootmgr.dsk

I believe that the Xubuntu could run it since it is the light version. It can run 98 but 98 se runs slow with AV installed. win95 runs great. I could put on DSL Linux it I can run the install routine by a command line. How did they install it before the Live boot up??? The Live version has got to run a command line to start the install so what is that? Please.

I don't know about the rawrite stuff, sorry. This link may be relevant: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-81280.html It might also be worth trying the ubuntu-users mailing list https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users

xubuntu may be light but I'm not sure it's *that* light, though I'd be happy to be proved wrong :)

Before xubuntu/ubuntu used the live cd it used the alternate cds

This will work, however it will need a large swap space and it will take about a minute to get a reaction from a menu. It would be too frustrating to use.

According to official webpage, Xubuntu needs at least 64MB RAM.
