screen resolution stuck at 640x480

When I start Ubuntu, the screen resolution is unchangable and is stuck at 640x480. how do i change this?

it works...but i will add......that it would be nice to fix this for new users

I think mine was stuck at 800x600 until I fully installed. That made it impossible to install without moving the panels. It would be a VERY good idea to fix this simple problem for new users.
