Can not install Ubuntu linux on virtual machine

Asked by Stuart Sutton

For a computer science course I am taking, students have to
install Ubuntu 6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso on a virtual machine created
with VMware Player. My pc is an HP Pavilion a1610n model using the
Windows XP operating system. The VMware Player has been installed and appears to be in order. I have a folder called VM421 on my personal computer's 'C' drive which contains .vmx and .vmdk files
needed for the operation of the virtual machine housed on the VMware
Player. The .vmx and .vmdk files were provided by the course instructor. I have downloaded the Ubuntu.iso file and copied it to a
dvd. Following the professor's directions I have placed a copy of the Ubuntu.iso in the folder containing the .vmx and .vmdk files.
At this point I get stuck. I do not know how to install the
Ubuntu linux operating system on my virtual machine. I do not seem
to be able to do anything using the 6.06.1---.iso file I have in the
VM421 folder. What do I do to establish a functiioning Ubuntu linux
operating system on my virtual machine? Your comments and advice are
appreciated.

It sounds like the professor has provided you with an empty virtual machine image. You will either need to burn the .iso file to disk, or you can probably use "daemon tools" for Windows, which is a software tools to mount ISOs and make them appear as a CD-ROM drive to windows.

Next, with the disk in drive or ISO mounted, run the virtual machine image (.vmx file) with VMware Player. VMware should start up and boot the CD automatically, at which point you can proceed with the install as normal. (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation)
